  • General
    • What types of insurance coverage do you accept?
We accept payment from a vast number of payer sources, including Medicaid and Medicare. For specific insurance-related questions, please contact your closest NSM branch.
    • What happens if my insurance changes?
Contact your local NSM branch and notify the customer service representative of any changes. We will contact your insurance provider and determine what is needed to make sure your order is managed appropriately and continues to progress.
    • How can I know if a rehab seating company is qualified?
Qualified companies have Rehab Technology Suppliers (RTSs) on staff who have been certified by the National Registry of Rehabilitation Technology Suppliers (NRRTS) and the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA). These seating and mobility professionals must pass rigorous testing and have several years of experience in the industry. Ask the wheelchair providers you are considering for their credentials or contact one of the credentialing agencies or for certification requirements.
    • Is there anything I can do to expedite the process of receiving my equipment?
Yes, you can assist with obtaining the paperwork from your physician and your therapist. As their patient, you can contact them and request that they provide the necessary documentation as quickly as possible. NSM cannot submit for funding without the proper documentation. Once it is submitted, you can contact your funding source to request they expedite your authorization.

Each chair can be designed for maximum comfort and ease and will provide the specific therapeutic benefits prescribed for you by the health care team. But what really sets NSM apart is our approach. • How can I work with NSM for my mobility needs?
National Seating & Mobility is a member of your rehabilitation health care team. We work with your physician, nurses and therapists to provide a one-of-a-kind mobility solution customized to your needs and preferences. Because we work in a partnership with your health care team, we require a referral from them in order to be your mobility provider. • How long does it take to get a new power wheelchair from NSM?
NSM strives to complete each timeline phase as quickly as possible without compromising any step in the process. Please refer to this page for the full timeline. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
    • Why must I see a doctor to get a wheelchair from NSM?
Our clients have mobility challenges and are referred to us by therapists and physicians to receive mobility solutions that meets all their unique needs. If you need a wheelchair, your best plan is to talk with your physician or therapist and get a thorough evaluation from a qualified Rehab Technology Supplier (RTS).
    • What if my medical condition changes?
Contact your local NSM branch and notify us of any changes that may affect the proper fit and function of your chair.
    • Are there any dangers in using an off-the-shelf wheelchair?
Definitely. A standard or not customized chair can cause more harm than good. People come in all shapes and sizes; their chairs must be designed to fit them. In severe situations, a standard or not customized chair may:

      • Cause significant physiological and psychological problems
      • Lead to an increase in dependence because it’s not used due to lack of comfort
      • Cause pressure sores, or decubitus, due to improper cushioning
      • Become obsolete quickly if not configured to “grow with the child”
      • Become a major expense to replace or reconfigure, because most funding sources will only reimburse for a new chair every five years.
    • Do I have a choice of which mobility solutions company to use?
The choice of a wheeled mobility supplier is yours. Discuss your decision with your physician and therapist.

    • How do I maintain my stair lift?
There is little you need to do to maintain your stair lift. However, to keep your stair lift in good working order, it is advisable to keep the rails free from obstruction. Regularly wiping the rails with a dry cloth to remove dust is recommended, although avoid using damp cloths or sprays. Regular servicing will also ensure the smooth running of your stair lift. Should you encounter any problems, we provide a repairs and support service. Our quality stair lifts come with the longest warranty in the industry on most models – lifetime coverage on the motor and drive train, with 3 years parts warranty and 1 year labor coverage. We offer several extended warranty opportunities after the first year.
    • Can I install my stair lift myself?
We strongly recommend that your stair lift is installed by a professional technician. Not only does it ensure your stair lift is safe to use, but in many states, like Connecticut and Rhode Island, it is a legal requirement that stairway chair lift installation and service technicians be licensed. The license process requires several years of field training, factory training, instruction and class work that includes electronics, AC/DC electricity, hydraulics and building safety codes. Combined, AccessNSM technicians have hundreds of years of experience in satisfying our customer’s stair lift needs.
    • Can a stair lift be fitted to my staircase if it has a turn, curve or spiral in it?
Yes, we provide custom curved stair lifts to fit nearly all types of staircase, and our lifts can travel on the inside or outside of the staircase.
    • Will installing a stair lift block our staircase?
All of our stair lifts are designed to take up minimal space, and they fold when not in use. Some stair lift models sit only 12″ from the wall, leaving enough comfortable space for walking.
    • How soon can my stair lift be installed?
We can install a stair lift at your convenience, typically within 2-5 business days. In emergencies, we can schedule your stair lift installation the same day. Our facility houses one of the largest inventories of stair lifts in New England, so we always have many models in stock ready to be installed.
    • Will the stair lift installation damage my walls?
No, installing a stair lift does not cause any damage to your walls. The stair lift rail attaches to the staircase, not the wall.
    • How do I move forward with my stair lift inquiry?
Contact us by calling our toll free customer service line at 615-257-7831 or fill out our online information request form. Our friendly, knowledgeable representatives are ready to assist you with any stair lift questions or requests. You can also request a free stair lift information pack by mail or a no-charge, no-obligation in-home stair lift evaluation and quotation performed by our trained accessibility product consultants.
    • Can I rent a stair lift?
Certainly. We offer several stair lift rental programs, with our Rent to Purchase Plan being the most popular. This plan allows you to rent a stair lift for up to 3 months, and if you decide to purchase, you receive full credit for the three months rental toward your stair lift purchase. You may also rent a stair lift on a month-to-month basis with no long-term contract, just a three month minimum.
    • What are the benefits of a battery-powered stair lift?
There are many benefits of having a battery-powered electric stair lift. It can be used during power outages, and they can provide multiple trips up and down the stairs without a recharge. This means your safety and independence is never sacrificed during a power interruption.
    • Do you offer financing?
NSM understands many customers prefer a monthly payment schedule to a lump sum purchase. That’s why we offer several financing options - learn more here.
